The Health & Safety Executive,Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety,have released the work-related fatal injury statistics for 2024/2025, which revealed up to 124 deaths.
Covering the period from April 2024 to March 2025, the worker-death total was found to be lower than the previous year, which revealed as many as 138 deaths, which is believed to be broadly in line with pre-pandemic levels.
The common causes of fatal injuries from 2024/2025 are as follows:
- Falls from height (35)
- Being struck by a moving object (18), and
- Being trapped by something collapsing or overturning (17).
Industries with the Highest Mortality Rates
The industries with the highest number of deaths were construction, in which a total of 35 were reported, and agriculture, forestry and fishing, which reported up to 23. Of all industry sectors, agriculture, forestry, and fishing continue to have the highest rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers, followed by waste and recycling. An additional 92 deaths were reported relating to members of the public who were in a workplace but not working themselves.
Sarah Albon, HSE’s Chief Executive, commented: “Great Britain is one of the safest places in the world to work, but we must remember each of these deaths represents a tragedy for families, friends and communities.”
“Despite the stability in numbers, we cannot accept that fatal accidents are an inevitable part of working life. We are encouraged by the long-term trend but urge against complacency on workplace safety.”
Please note, however, that these figures relate to work-related accidents and do not include deaths resulting from occupational diseases or diseases associated with certain occupational exposures.
The HSE has also published the annual figures for mesothelioma. These statistics relate to the number of deaths which occurred due to exposure to asbestos in the workplace. In 2023, a reported 2,218 people died from asbestos-related diseases, representing a fall of 62 compared with 2022 (and substantially lower than the average of 2,508 deaths per year from 2011-2020).
It is also important to note that these mesothelioma deaths reflect incidents of asbestos exposure that occurred before the 1980s. However, annual deaths are expected to continue declining during the next decade.
