According to the Health & Safety Executive, from 2023/24, an estimated 61,663 (non-fatal) injuries were reported by employees.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, the rate of self-reported non-fatal injury to workers showed a generally downward trend. The current rate (1,890 injuries per 100,000 workers) is similar to the 2018/19 pre-coronavirus level.
Non-fatal injuries to employees by most accident kinds reported under RIDDOR in 2023/24 revealed that 31% of injuries were due to slips, trips or falls. Otherwise, handling, lifting or carrying accounted for 17%. However, employees struck by a moving object accounted for as much as 10% of the overall figures.
Following an accident of this same kind, a client of ours has successfully secured a £85,000 settlement following an injury at the workplace that left him unconscious.
Employed as a warehouse operative at a distribution depot, our client’s duties included unloading pallets from lorries and stacking them.
On the day of the incident, our client was in the process of stacking pallets when the load unexpectedly fell from the forklift truck. The load struck him on the head, and loss of consciousness followed.
Upon arrival at the Accident & Emergency department, it was determined that our client had sustained compression fractures to his spine. Immediate emergency spinal surgery was required.
The personal injury specialists at Russell & Russell Solicitors (who run and own this website) were instructed four months before the limitation period, allowing our experts to respond swiftly. Arrangements were made for him to be examined by specialist surgeons who were able to adequately assess the full extent of our client’s injuries.
Proceedings were subsequently initiated on our client’s behalf, and a settlement of £85,000.00 was ultimately reached.
